The exterior is the most valuable part of a home to paint and often is the most expensive paint project a homeowner will have to invest in. It is the most valuable because the coatings on an exterior protect materials from becoming compromised and disintegrating from the elements.

FAQ's

How long should a painted exterior last?

An exterior that has been thoroughly prepped, coated with the appropriate primers and quality paints should last 10 years before light prep and maintenance coats, making the next time you paint much more cost effective. If an exterior has not lasted that long, it is either because materials were skimped on or the prep work was inadequate.

Which paints do you use on exteriors?

For our base process, we use Sherwin Williams Duration and Sherwin Williams Emerald, which will last about 10 years before maintenance is recommended. We also offer an upgrade using Fine Paints of Europe. With Fine Paints of Europe, you should expect 15-20 years before maintenance should be considered on your exterior.

What is Fine Paints of Europe?

Fine Paints of Europe is an importer and distributor of paint from Holland known for their luxury enamels, particularly their mirror-like, “brilliant” gloss finishes. They also sell various premium wall paints, primers, and varnishes.

Their products do not contain many of the fillers and deadeners of domestic products, while also using premium pigments. The result is higher quality and a dangerously attractive finish.

What is the benefit of Fine Paints of Europe?

For trim: There is no product in the market that can evoke a “wow” factor like Fine Paints of Europe while providing unrivaled durability. For premium trim packages, options can can range from traditional brushed oil enamel, brilliant gloss, silky satin.

For walls: Besides being similar in cost to Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin Williams Emerald, it has greater advantages. Because Eurolux has less fillers and deadeners, their flat is the only truly scrubbable and washable “flat” on the market. Coupled with higher quality pigments, the finish is simply more attractive.

What sheen should I go with on my exterior?

Generally, a good rule is using a flat or low sheen finish on the body and a satin or gloss finish on trim (similar rule for interiors).

The more gloss that is in paint, the more protective and reflective it is on the surface. If you have a surface with many imperfections (most historic homes), the higher the level of gloss there is, the more the imperfections will be highlighted. Typically on historic homes, flat is recommended.

Sometimes, rules are meant to be broken, especially if you are looking at making a statement with your exterior and it is in good condition or are looking to invest in a thorough paint job. Fine Paints of Europe Eco Satin and Brilliant can bring out a dangerously attractive look on an exterior.

Do you help with selecting colors?

Yes! With every project, we offer a complimentary color consultation with an interior designer. It is very important to us that you LOVE the final result of your project!

Will you paint brick or masonry?

Yes! However, we will not put “masonry” primers or exterior paints on masonry. For unfinished masonry, we would opt to use a mineral based paint. See our “Limewash and Mineral Paints” page for more details!

Do you stain exterior siding or decks?

Yes! We offer exterior staining for siding and decks, along with exterior wood restoration. However, exterior staining should truly be considered a luxury finish due to its frequent upkeep of the recommended maintenance schedule, and we are very selective on the products we use. See our “Exterior Staining'' page for more details!

What’s the difference between your base process, deep sand and chemical stripping?

Ultimately, our goal with exterior painting is to set up our clients for success so that at minimum they will not have to touch their exterior for at least a decade before light prep and maintenance coats are needed. By doing the legwork of thorough prep up front, using high quality primers and paints. We offer three processes for exteriors.

Base Process: Our “base” process absolutely does not mean low quality, but rather it is the minimum amount of work we are willing to do on an exterior, which is often the maximum many other painters are willing to do. Our base process is this: the exterior will be cleaned, thoroughly and meticulously prepped (on older and historic homes, every single inch will be tested with a scraper), primed and painted with the appropriate and high quality products. With our base process, 10 years should be expected before needing light prep and maintenance coats.

Deep Sand: This is an “add-on” to our base process that is designed to take our prep process further, while also beautifying the appearance of an exterior. In short, through using dustless orbital sanders attached to HEPA vacuums, we are not only able to take prep further than what can be achieved through hand scraping, but the finished result is more attractive (hand scraped surfaces leave hard lines). The sanders we use are designed to aggressively remove material, which leaves a more level surface.

Chemical Stripping: This is the best option if a client is looking for a restoration of their exterior and remove decades of rough, cracking paint. By chemical striping, we are able ensure a firm foundation for finish coat, while also resulting in the aesthetically the most pleasing finishes. While chemical stripping can be messy, we use plant safe chemical stripping agents and take extra precautions to protect your landscaping and perimeter around your home.

Do you do wood/exterior repairs?

At the moment, we do not offer carpentry or handyman services. If you are in need of exterior repairs, we have trusted contractors and carpenters we work with and we will gladly refer to you.
