FAQ's

How long do I need to wait before I stain new wood?

Ideally, you should let new wood weather for one year, or one winter minimum before you should have the first coat of stain applied.

My old stain is peeling and flaking, can you re-stain the failing finishes?

No, you can not apply stain over peeling or flaking (finishes) finishes. All failed stained finish must be fully stripped off. In fact, most film-forming stains on the market require a full chemical strip for maintenance regardless of peeling or not. In most cases, a chemical strip followed by a light sand is the course of action we take, while occasionally a mechanical strip is required.

What type of stain do you use on exteriors?

We are very particular about the stains we use on exteriors. We use penetrating oil stains, such as Armstrong Clark. Penetrating oil stains penetrates the wood and replenishes exterior wood with the natural oil it needs, while providing UV protection, breathability, and simple maintenance. We will not put any water based stain or film forming stains on exterior stained wood.

Do your services include staining exotic hardwoods?

Yes! We can stain and finish exotic hardwoods, using penetrating oil stains.

How long will a stained finish last?

Stained exterior should truly be considered a luxury finish as it requires frequent maintenance, with variations depending on the transparency of the stain and amount of weathering the surface takes. Luckily, with the products we use, the maintenance process is as simple as it can get for stained surfaces and will never require chemical stripping again!

What does maintenance look like for stained surfaces?
